Golden Coil Planner
Limited-edition planner
Golden Coil focuses on creating individualized planners, notebooks, notepads, and other planning products for people looking to simplify their planning process.
They announced a limited-edition planner contest, and I wanted to see my design in their offerings.
Planner Design
Golden Coil always has a nice mix of abstract, floral, and geometric designs on their planner. This time around, I found that they have no bright florals in their offering. So my focus instantly was on a bright, fun, floral design.
I imagined my summer sunrise walks, as that is my favorite time to spend outside with my dog. I wanted the planner to feel warm, happy, and full of good-morning energy, so whoever holds this planner would feel inspired and ready for their day.
The sketch
My surface pattern designs usually have a lot of layered motifs, and this floral is no different. I let my imagination go and drew a bunch of daisies, tulips, lavender, and wildflowers with cloves. I wanted the pattern to be vertically flowy with movements to both sides.

Once I was happy with the sketch, I drew the motifs one by one with a vector brush, added a soft, uneven linework, and imported the file from Fresco into Illustrator, where I built the pattern and recolored it to this bright orange-yellow-pink colorway.
Originally, I saved the file with papertexture and in RGB. So once the design was accepted, I reworked it per Golden Coil’s instructions and sent over the pattern swatch.
